Mercury Retrograde and the Coming Eclipses and Forecast for December 12-18

By Leo Knighton Tallarico

As we move closer to the Lunar Eclipse Full Moon on the Winter Solstice, we experience Mercury going Retrograde.  It went retrograde yesterday (Friday Dec. 10). The Eclipse will be in 10 days, on the 21st.  As I write today, everything feels very normal and stable.   Yet, I know the rumblings of great change are stirring deep beneath the surface.

Mercury going retrograde causes a kind of rewind of mental energies.   Memories are ready to come back into consciousness, friends from the past seek to reappear in our lives.  Issues that were apparently resolved, find their way back to be witnessed again.  Events come into our awareness and lives which help us shift our perceptions and opinions.

Mercury retrograde comes around every 3-4 months for approximately 3 weeks duration each time.  This time it goes back direct on December 30.

It is time to reflect on how we communicate, to find new ways that are less obsessed with left brain exactness, and more concerned with really connecting with others.

You know, the heart has intelligence also, and now your mind needs to take more of back seat to the heart’s wisdom.   Also the right brain’s function of creativity and imagination are more helpful in thinking and communicating now.

If you are pushing your brain too hard to compute or understand, let go and let things unfold before your eyes more.    If you are trying too hard to find an answer, give up that chase and trust the answers to come to you when it is time.  If you let go of trying too hard, the Mercury retrograde period will be more graceful.  Difficulties come into our lives during Mercury Retrograde  because we need to readjust our mental vision and ways we communicate.  We are needing to change our perceptions of things.

So as we readjust our mental vision, we also get ready for the coming eclipses.  The first one is most significant, as it is a Lunar Eclipse Full Moon at 29+ degrees of Sun in Sagittarius and Moon in Gemini.  It is on December 21 at 3:13  AM eastern USA time.  About half a day later, at 6:38 PM, there is the Winter Solstice, the darkest time of the year.

This somber winter solstice moment, combined with a very excitable and highly energized eclipse, is a stange combination.  Great intensity is to be combined with deep sadness and seriousness. Mercury will still be retrograde then, and there may a kind of surreal feeling surrounding the time of the solstice and surrounding the holiday season.

The second Eclipse will a Solar Eclipse New Moon in Capricorn.   It will release much energy and move us powerfully forward with new projects and plans.

We can expect more big and earth shaking events during this eclipse season and throughout the winter season.    I let you know before that from late October through January were the times most susceptible to these very big events which will appreciably change our lives.  So it is wise to look at what has been happening during that period so far.

Change we can believe in has not happened at all since Obama was elected. The status quo keeps its hold.  Continued tax cuts for the rich, continued “Don’t ask and Don’t Tell”, continued wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Continued deadlock between Israel and Palestine. Continued bailouts of big monied interests.   Continued stock market gains while regular americans suffer a continued recession. There has been little effort to make real deep transformational change.  Is it not obvious now that it will take huge world events to break down the old world and its grip on our lives?  This eclipse season promises such change.

North and South Korea opened fire on one another in early November, and threatened war. It is certainly the most dangerous interaction they have had with one another since the Korean War in 1950-53.   There are worries that China, Japan, and the USA will be pulled into war there. The eclipse aspects the charts of North and Sout Korea, and needs to be looked at closely now.

Wilileaks cables were revealed during this eclipse season also, and this Wikileaks situation is a very big event already and will likeyl get bigger.  Freedom of the press and freedom of information for citizens of the USA and world is at stake.  Powers that Be are worried that world security is being threatened as a result of the leaks.  I am sure that the freedom of the internet may be threatened also as a result of Wilileaks.  Paypal and Amazon have closed accounts with Wikileaks.  Protests have erupted around the world against the attacks on Wikileaks and its leader Julian Assange.

From a broader perspective, the Wikileaks situation is about moving away from the closed structures of an old world and its obsolete paradigm.  Freedom of information and power to the people is the new world and Aquarian Age.  Control by the privileged few and by mega governments and corporations is the old world and age.  The Wikileaks revolution is part of the transition between ages.

The fall of the old economy is part of the transition between ages.  The fall of the superpower empires of the Soviet Union and soon the USA is part of the transition between ages.   The coming battles in the Middle East and Far East are part of the restructuring of our world to move into the world of equality and liberation, of Diversity in Unity of an Aquarian Age.

Stay flexible and open during the eclipse season and beyond.    What will potentially make things bad during this time for you, is to be tight and stressed, to not trust nature and the Universe.

What is coming our way is part of the natural cycles of nature and the Universe. That is whay astrology represents.   Summer turns to autumn, new moons grow into full moons, Pisces age turns to Aquarian Age.

The changing of Ages is one of the bigger cycles, a cycle of 2160 years, so of course the birth pains are bigger and more dramatic.

It is important you trust this shift in the Universe and in our lives- As Above, So Below.  Be like a child again, trusting the changes of life that are beyond your control.   You do have creative input for your own personal life still. Everything will not be taken away. But it may be wise to simplify your life more, to return to your better values, to be grateful for what you have, to be present every moment, to open your heart and trust more.

No, we cannot keep just spending and spending anymore. No we cannot keep so distant from each other anymore.  No we cannot keep judging others or ourselves so much anymore. No we cannot afford to close our eyes to the truth anymore.

But we can still have love in our lives and hope in our hearts.  Life will always be a great place to be, no matter what is coming our way.

  1. Thank you for the insightful words. I have experienced a profound loss during this time and your words of letting the right-side of the brain take over is important as I have been struggling to logically understand the reason for the loss.

  2. A great read as usual Leo; special thanks for the heads up on Mercury retrograde and the upcoming eclipses. You have a great perspective on world events! Many Blessings for a joyful hoiday season!

  3. Loved reading this. Thanks for posting.

  4. In my experience, the intellect can be comfortably familiar footing to stand in and a challenging gear to steer away from on the Map of Consciousness. However, as I hear rapper C.L. Smooth spit about the “ghettos of the mind”, I realize there is a death in letting go of the security of any comfort zone. In much the same way as any death, like the death of the old self, there is loss and it is so important to allow for permission to grieve, for the tears to flow. And so it was that the rains came heavy in these parts last night, as did the answers that blew somewhere in the wind. Although I realize the most important relationship is with my Self–Kuan Yin’s energy is teaching me, or perhaps it’s my own Inner Voice (are the two mutually exclusive?)–reminding me that being gentle with myself and others is the Heart of Compassion.

In the spirit of that, the more I choose to focus on the love and light in myself and everyone and everything else for that matter (rather than get stuck in the quicksand of negativity), I am getting into alignment and embracing the Natural cycles of life and death, allowing suffering to pass with care, if you Will. As I allow the herbs to gently seep in, I am noticing the medicine in allowing the light to illuminate the shadows (though a bitter pill to digest at times for sure!), there are nuggets of gold somewhere over the rainbow (perhaps in the eighth Chakra).

Finally, I have weathered many, many times of trauma and darkness in this lifetime (like the time my mom took her own life when I was 20), when I have really had to dig deep (without the assistance of any fancy technology) and find that vortex of energy inside of myself to keep on truckin’ in this long, strange trip. Learning to keep one foot in the ground, one foot in spirit is an ongoing process–easier said than done, I know. Becoming a Watcher is a helpful and free strategy, as is picturing a waterfall in times of tension–wood you believe it literally uproots and washes away any stubborn, rigid trees of the moment! I swear a deer once mentioned that even the Buddha was inundated by this coping skill.

In the meanwhile, “may love be a friend, may your life storms end and your seasons be sweet, till we meet again . . . ”

    Ari

  5. Had I not the pleasure of meeting Leo and Deb when they began producing a radio show here in Santa Fe, I’d still think Astrology was “woo-woo” I was there for the production of “the Tower” in ’01, and saw the truth behind this ancient science. Leo, you are so accurate! Deb, you bring the goddess out in everyone!
